However in the last couple of months it has been Karren Brady’s weight loss that is making the headlines. But I also can’t help but question, What if their confusion is not only due to their theoretical naivete? What if a completely Darwinian explanation for human pores and skin variation is hard to understand because it seriously isn’t the best explanation? Maybe my next course should be focused on assessment and fleshing out how exactly we could test the adaptive hypothesis for individual pigmentation reduction versus the alternatives. But why do so many pets in UV-limited habitats (caves and sea floor) lose pigment? Could it be one among the few noticeable traits that a constant accumulation of mutations can safely derail under the watchful eyes of the selection? And what about epigenetics and pigmentation? Oh, I don’t know, maybe Stephen Colbert had it right: Pale skin is most beneficial for hiding in a snowbank.
